Following majority is so easy. Going with the flow is natural but you might not reach your destination. I was driving and suddenly I find road is closed and there is no detour. On that particular day i was not carrying my GPS with me and I started to follow where most of the cars were going without even finding what is their destination. What is the end result? I wasted lot of my time when I noticed all those cars dispersed in different directions and I was lost. Lesson learned: always carry your gps. Allah warns if we follow majority they will mislead us. In driving example, it feels more intelligent to carry a GPS then to rely on majority.
But when it comes to wearing tight jeans, it will look awkward to wear loose jeans because most of the people are wearing tight jeans. When it comes to using a smartphone, it will look outdated to use a flip phone because majority is using smart phone. When it comes to spending on our homes and outlooks, marriages, social events, it will look stingy to save that money to spend on needed stuff because everybody is not doing so.
Quran is our GPS to remain on straight path so what leads us to follow majority instead of following Quran?
I need to make at least these duaas repeatedly.
Leaving the home
O Allah, I seek refuge in You lest I misguide others , or I am misguided by others , lest I cause others to err or I am caused to err , lest I abuse others or be abused, and lest I behave foolishly or meet with the foolishness of others.
Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, An-Nasa'i, At-Tirmithi. See also Al-Albani, Sahih At-Tirmithi 3/152 and Sahih Ibn Majah 2/336
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ حُبَّكَ وَحُبَّ مَنْ يُحِبُّكَ وَحُبَّ عَمَلٍ يُقَرِّبُنِي إِلَى حُبِّكَ
O Allah, I ask You for Your Love, and the love of whoever loves You, and the love of deeds that will bring me closer to Your Love.
